Great spot for affordable and authentic (or so I'm told) Chinese food! Convenient location in Chinatown, not far from Union Square.
Una buena sopa 'hot + sour' para empezar. Lovely dinner before the Chinese New Years Parade, where the firecrackers were boom, booming all around us as we ate! Nice, clean location with two restrooms downstairs. Spotty, slow service, no extra charges typical for a SF restaurant and a pot of tea when you sit works for me.
Came here thinking it was Hunan Restaurant now is Thaishan, I used to eat at Hunan as child; so I'm not sure if is new owners or the same , the menu change from what I remember , before you could order as a group and they had packages with different food item selections. Bobo was our waitress she was very nice and gave a us marker to mark the food we were Ordering, prices were extremely reasonable specially for SF, portions were good size and everything was fresh and tasty. There's parking in the street but let's be honest is SF. There's a public parking down the street however pay attention because they want you to pay with your phone as soon as you park however there's no reception and they issue tickets...
Came here bc mark & chenle came here (lol) but overall gives very homey, good chinese food vibes. Service is quick & they are very well known for their claypot rice offerings. The egg yolk custard buns were also a favorite of ours
The vibes reminded me of Asia with a whole table of 8-10 uncles bantering loudly with occasional cigarette breaks right outside of the restaurant. There was only one waitress running the whole dining area (props to her) so service was a bit slow but understandable. Food was up to standard and will come back again to try their other dishes for lunch and dinner. Overall the experience was not as pleasant as I wish but it's all for the vibes so I'll give it another chance!
I came here with my parents for lunch and there's lot of open seating. My parents wanted to come here since they missed the eel clay pot rice they grew up eating in China. Even at 12pm there were only 2 other tables that were occupied. They have a large selection on the menu with many chefs and house special dishes. They also serve dim sum here if you're not sure what type of Chinese food you want. Yellow Eel Clay Pot Rice (4.5/5) - the rice was well made, and the crispy rice from the bottom of the pot made for great contrast in texture! It's very close to traditional yellow eel clay pot rice that you can find in China! Steamed White Eel with Black Bean Sauce (5/5) - best dish of the meal! The eel was the perfect texture, slightly crunchy (in a good way) and not mushy. Flavors were bold and nostalgic! Taishan Five Flavor Goose (3.5/5) - the flavors were great but the goose itself wasn't great quality (most likely can't compare to what you find in China) Green String Beans (5/5) - they were just right! Well seasoned in a garlicky stir fry, crispy and light. If you are in the area and looking for authentic Chinese eel or clay pot dishes, you should check out Taishan Restaurant! Fun Fact: They have a karaoke room in the back!
